![]() Underneath are two layers, the first macro empire building 4x game where you expand your sectors, claim territory and unearth a random map. The aesthetics are all 1980s cartoons all neon and garish. A bit of a kitchen sink of classic tropes like bug dudes and terminators all mashed together. Much of this feels better as the game progresses, thankfully, but the early game is often far from explosive. There are too few buildings for my taste, and they build so fast that the early game often results in idle cities. Unfortunately, one of my biggest issues is city development. It really helps to spawn more major factions than the game recommends, or else it's a fairly sparse, almost solo exploration experience early on. Map nodes feel less impactful than they do in HOMM, and leaders don't always feel like they have a personality and agenda as they do in Civ. Under default settings, the world is too sparsely populated. Where I find that the series can be a bit off-putting is that it can sometimes feel aimless and unpopulated. I personally think that the units are pretty comprehensive, covering a lot of sci-fi and gothic space fantasy tropes pretty nicely, and it all looks unexceptional but solid. "Spellcasting" is well-executed as well, with diverse and unique abilities that can be used in combat or on the strategic map. When you add minor factions to the mix, the customizability of the armies feels really great, especially since each unit can gain experience, has base abilities, and can be equipped with up to three mods (so for example, the Dvar basic unit can dig-in, regardless of secret tech). Do you want to be space-dwarves who traffic biological plagues? Sure! But you can also be psychic space marines, if you want, or space marines with bioweapons, or dwarves with psychic powers. Because each side is defined by a pairing of race and "class" (in Planetfall, "class" is replaced by "secret technology"), with a customizable leader hero, you can create some interesting combos. What AOW does really well is the flexibility. Multiple armies from each side may take part in the battles, which are hex-based and feel a LOT like the tactical battles of HOMM, but with more depth. You can settle cities, and units move in armies of up to 6 units that may be (but are not obligated to be) led by a hero. In terms of what it plays like, it's sort of like a cross between Heroes of Might and Magic and Civilization, with the closest comparison being the Endless series.
